SUBMISSIONS FOR THE LARNE BOROUGH COUNCIL POLICY ON THE DISPLAY, PURCHASE AND ERECTION OF BUNTING, FLAGS AND EMBLEMS

On Friday 26 November 2010 submissions, prepared with the assistance of the UHRW and Schmidt Consulting, were handed over to Larne Borough Council as a contribution to the consultation process in relation to the policy on display, purchase and erection of flags, bunting and emblems.

The purpose of these submissions were mainly to determine the legal basis for the display of the Union Flag, the Ulster Flag, traditional red, white and blue bunting and emblems of the Monarchy. This is an important subject since the policy on display should reflect the recognised legal status of Northern Ireland as being part of the United Kingdom.

It is hoped that Larne Borough Council will take into consideration the recommendations that were respectfully made. As a result the Council could take the decision to review its policy so as to make it compliant with the Northern Ireland Act 1998, and in particular with Section 1, to the benefit of the whole community of the Borough.
